In the Book of Numbers, there is an unusual and captivating story where a donkey miraculously speaks to its owner, Balaam, to deliver a message from God. The story, found in Numbers 22:21–35, showcases God’s power to use any means necessary—even a humble animal—to convey His will and guide His people.
The Bible Passage:
"Then the LORD opened the donkey's mouth, and it said to Balaam, 'What have I done to you to make you beat me these three times?'” (Numbers 22:28, KJV)
Background of Balaam and His Mission
The story takes place during Israel’s journey through the wilderness to the Promised Land. Balak, the king of Moab, was intimidated by the Israelites' numbers and power, fearing they might conquer his territory. To protect his kingdom, Balak sent messengers to hire Balaam, a prophet known for his spiritual power and reputation. Balak’s hope was that Balaam would curse Israel, rendering them vulnerable and easy to defeat.
Although Balaam initially hesitated, God ultimately instructed him not to go with Balak’s men, warning that Israel was blessed and could not be cursed. However, King Balak continued to send more prestigious messengers with greater rewards, tempting Balaam. God then allowed Balaam to go but instructed him to speak only what God commanded.
The Journey and the Angel
On the way to Moab, Balaam saddled his donkey and set off, but his heart was divided. Although he outwardly obeyed God, his desire for wealth and honor clouded his intentions. Knowing Balaam’s conflicted motives, God sent an angel to confront him. However, the angel was invisible to Balaam, and only the donkey could see it.
Three times, the donkey saw the angel standing in the road with a drawn sword, blocking their way. Each time, the donkey reacted to protect Balaam. First, it turned off the path into a field; next, it pressed against a wall, crushing Balaam’s foot; finally, it lay down under Balaam, refusing to move forward. Balaam, unaware of the angel’s presence, was frustrated and beat the donkey each time.
The Miracle of the Speaking Donkey
After the third beating, God opened the donkey’s mouth, enabling it to speak. The donkey asked Balaam why he had been beaten three times, expressing its confusion and pain. Shocked, Balaam answered the donkey as though it were a normal conversation, saying that if he had a sword, he would kill it. The donkey then reminded Balaam of its long loyalty and faithful service. This unusual encounter helped Balaam realize that something extraordinary was happening.
In that moment, God opened Balaam’s eyes, allowing him to see the angel standing in their path. The angel rebuked Balaam for his mistreatment of the donkey, revealing that the animal had saved Balaam’s life by stopping each time. The angel further instructed Balaam to speak only the words God would put in his mouth.
Lessons from the Story
This remarkable story demonstrates several lessons. Firstly, it illustrates that God will use any means necessary, even miraculous ones, to guide His people in the right direction. Balaam’s donkey became an unlikely but essential messenger of God’s warning.
Secondly, it reminds us that God sees our inner motivations and desires. Although Balaam seemed to be following God’s command, his heart was divided. The story warns us against letting worldly desires compromise our commitment to God’s will.
Finally, the speaking donkey represents God’s sovereignty over all creation. Just as God used Balaam’s donkey to protect him and convey His message, He can work through even the most unexpected circumstances in our lives to lead us toward His purpose.
In the end, Balaam followed the angel’s command, continuing his journey to Moab but delivering only the blessings God had commanded, not curses. This story of Balaam and his talking donkey reminds us to trust in God’s guidance, to remain faithful to His instructions, and to be open to His voice—even when it comes from the most unexpected sources.
