The Anointing You Didn't Know You Had
God's calling on your life is real—even if you can't feel it yet
"Then Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him in the midst of his brothers. And the Spirit of the Lord came upon David from that day forward." (1 Samuel 16:13)
Are you waiting for a sign that God has chosen you?
What if He already has, but you just don’t recognize it?
Many of us assume that when God anoints someone, it comes with a grand moment—light from heaven, a voice calling our name, or an overwhelming sense of purpose.
But the truth is, God often anoints in quiet, unseen ways. Long before we feel ready, before we even understand what He’s doing, His hand is already on us.
This hidden anointing is seen throughout the Bible. Ordinary people, unaware of what was happening, were anointed by God long before they stepped into their calling. Their journeys remind us that we don’t need to see the anointing to believe in it. We only need to trust in the One who gives it.
David Was Anointed Before He Was Ready
David’s story is one of the clearest examples of God’s unseen anointing. When the prophet Samuel came to Jesse’s house to anoint the next king, David wasn’t even considered important enough to be present. He was out tending sheep, unaware that God had already chosen him.
"Then Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him in the midst of his brothers. And the Spirit of the Lord came upon David from that day forward." (1 Samuel 16:13)
David was anointed as king, yet he went back to the fields. Nothing changed—on the surface. But in the spiritual realm, everything changed. God's Spirit was now upon him. Years would pass before he sat on the throne, but he was already anointed.
We often think we must reach a certain point of holiness, talent, or influence before we are truly chosen. But David was chosen while he was still a shepherd. God’s anointing isn’t about our qualifications—it’s about His purpose.
The Anointing Comes Before the Platform
Another example is Jesus Himself. Before He began His public ministry, He was already anointed. When He stood in the synagogue and read from Isaiah, He declared:
"The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because He has anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor..." (Luke 4:18)
Jesus was anointed, but for thirty years, He lived as a carpenter’s son. The world saw nothing remarkable. Yet, the anointing was there, waiting for its appointed time.
Many of us feel unseen, as though we are waiting for God to do something big in our lives. But what if He already has? What if the anointing is there, even in our ordinary days, waiting for the moment God will bring it into the open?
How to Walk in an Anointing You Don’t Feel
If you’ve ever wondered whether God has truly chosen you, take heart. His anointing is not about feelings—it’s about His divine purpose. Here’s how you can walk in that truth, even when you don’t feel it:
Trust God's Timing – David didn’t rush to take the throne. He waited. If you feel anointed but unseen, trust that God’s timing is perfect.
Stay Faithful in the Small Things – David was anointed while tending sheep. Jesus lived faithfully in Nazareth. Keep serving where you are.
Seek His Presence Daily – The anointing of the Holy Spirit isn’t a one-time event; it’s a relationship. Spend time in prayer and the Word.
Believe in What You Cannot See – Just because you don’t feel different doesn’t mean you aren’t anointed. Faith is believing beyond sight.
In Conclusion
The anointing of God is often quiet, unnoticed, and unrecognized—even by the one who carries it. But that does not make it any less real.
Just like David, just like Jesus, you may already be anointed for something greater than you can imagine.
If you have been waiting for a sign, this is it. The anointing is already on you. Walk in it.
